Riding for a Reason

Changing the world, one mile at a time

National Championships of Cycling Recap

Last weekend Downers Grove, IL hosted the National Championships of Cycling.  This was the first criterium event that I’ve attended, but it was quite a thrill!  Over 15,000 spectators were on hand to watch more than 900 cyclists compete in 14 races.  There was everything from a kids big wheel race to the Professional Criterium Championship.

A couple weeks ago I was considering competing in the Cat 5 race which is the novice level.  After talking to a couple of people, I’m glad that I didn’t, because it was pretty intense.  Definitely a goal for next year, but this year I was just there to enjoy it.  Although Katie’s comfort level with it diminished a little bit with the 3 crashes that we saw over the weekend.  The first 2 crashes were within the first 10 minutes that we were there!  Yeesh!!!  We arrived during the Masters (35+) Cat 4/5 race which features some of the more novice riders.  The first wreck seemed to be caused by a rider getting too close to the railing and once he fell about 4 other guys went down with him.  A couple laps later a guy got clipped right in front of us on the incline and fell by himself.  Dispite falling in the middle of the pack, he amazingly avoided getting hit by anyone else, although one person came within about 6 inches of him as he sat helpless in the middle of the track.

On a more positive note, there was some great racing that weekend.  It was good to see where I need to be at when the season opens up next year.  I have a lot of training to do to build up my average speed, but I don’t think it will be a problem.  Although it might be a little longer before I’m racing Cat 2 with some of my fellow Gear-Grinder teammates that were racing on Sunday.
